What Is Narcissistic Abuse?
Most people encounter the term narcissism in the context of interpersonal conflicts. However, narcissism is a personality trait we all possess to a greater or lesser degree. Like all traits, it exists on a continuum. Extreme narcissism diminishes our ability to see ourselves and the world as it is. It can impair our ability to enjoy healthy relationships with ourselves and others, which can harm our well-being. In cases of extreme narcissism, narcissistic abuse can occur.
Narcissistic abuse is a subtle kind of abusive power and control, distinguished by an underhanded pattern of aggression that includes acts of intentional degradation, sabotage, exploitation, and betrayal. These behaviors can cause serious psychological distress to anyone experiencing them. Perpetrators of this kind of aggression are commonly highly narcissistic while others may have full-blown narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). It is important to note that narcissistic personality disorder is a decidedly rare phenomenon and can only be diagnosed by a licensed mental health professional.
