Elsie (Wlasichuk) Heinz was born on July 28, 1938, on a homestead farm in Veregin, Saskatchewan, Canada. Raised in a close-knit Ukrainian and Russian Doukhobor community, Elsie developed a deep sense of compassion and connection to others. From an early age, her nurturing spirit was evident as she lovingly cared for the animals on the family farm.
Elsie’s family moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, when she was 16, where she graduated from Isaac Newton High School in 1956. A track star with the nickname “The Weasel” for her agility in hurdling, she balanced her athletic pursuits with a job at a local movie theater. Though she attended business college briefly, financial constraints led her to start her career early, working in clerical roles before embarking on a lifelong adventure.
In 1967, Elsie immigrated to the United States, settling in Milwaukee as a medical administrator. It was there that she met Merrill Heinz, her devoted partner in life. They married in 1971 and began a journey that would take them across the globe, living in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Mexico, and throughout the United States. Elsie’s warmth and culinary skills, especially her famous Chinese meals, made her the heart of every community she joined.
A dedicated wife, mother, and friend, Elsie brought people together with her boundless love and energy. She raised her son, Doug, with care and devotion, creating a home filled with laughter, support, and memorable gatherings.
In her later years, Elsie remained active in her Tucson, Arizona, community, serving in leadership roles and volunteering tirelessly. Her adventurous spirit led her to travel extensively, with highlights including a safari in Kenya for her 80th birthday.
Elsie passed away on January 26, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, resilience, and love.
