Low Contact

Low contact is a strategy used to navigate complex interpersonal dynamics. It is the conscious reduction in the frequency of communication and/or interactions with another person to minimize the potential for conflict or emotional intensity.

Unlike the complete severing of ties involved with a no contact strategy, low contact allows for some level of connection to exist, but within carefully defined boundaries.

Some ways to implement a low contact strategy are:

  • Reduced frequency – Limiting the number of calls, messages, and/or interactions from daily to weekly or even less.
  • Changing communication methods – Shifting from phone calls to text messages or emails.
  • Low-Investment Interactions – Avoiding deep conversations or personal topics.
  • Restricted settings – Limiting interactions to public places or group settings.
  • Setting boundaries – Explicitly communicating limits on availability or acceptable topics of conversation is a key aspect of limited contact.
