Shame-based behaviors seek to relieve painful feelings of humiliation and grief through escapist behaviors, including avoidance, self-harm, addiction, and compulsions. The purpose of shame-based behaviors is to numb emotional pain. Dysfunctional narcissism often fuels shame-based behaviors through self-deception.
